The barrier will reduce tidal flood risk for around 11,300 homes and 1,500 businesses, while protecting key infrastructure and supporting long-term economic resilience across the area. Alongside the barrier across the River Parrett, the scheme will include downstream flood defences, fish and eel passage improvements, and other environmental enhancements and habitat creation.
Kier has been working on the site since 2023, with downstream defences progressing at pace and completion of the complex enabling works that form the safe working platforms and foundations for the tidal barrier.
A major turning point in the contract had come in April, when the Haven SeaSeven jack up left the site, with the companies having completed temporary works for the bypass channel and in-channel cofferdam.
