The fire left much of the former student accommodation without a roof and vulnerable to significant weather deterioration. Robertson has worked closely with Newcastle University throughout the pre-construction, surveying and design phases to help safeguard the historic building for future generations and has now begun repair work.
Initial work will focus on making the 1930s building wind and watertight through the full replacement of the traditional tiled roof and dormer windows.
Robertson Timber Engineering will supply and erect the timber roof structure, which will be manufactured offsite to maximise efficiency, reduce waste and ensure consistent quality.
Repairs will be carried out to the external façade, including structural repairs, restoration of chimneys and upper-floor party walls, as well as the removal of water-damaged internal finishes.
