As the only standalone exhibition dedicated to the UK’s concrete industry, The UK Concrete Show will once again provide a seminar experience designed to educate, enrich and engage. The Concrete Connect Seminar Theatre, located on the exhibition floor, will host more than 20 free-to-attend sessions across both show days.
Concrete Connect Seminar Theatre – two days of insight, innovation and industry debate
Across both show days, the Concrete Connect Seminar Theatre will host more than 20 free-to-attend sessions examining the technical, commercial and strategic challenges shaping the UK concrete sector.
The two-day programme combines expert presentations, applied case studies and moderated panel discussions, bringing together representatives from research institutions, contractors, manufacturers and industry bodies to share practical insight and measurable outcomes.
Day One: From net zero strategy to advanced materials
The programme opens with From specification to site: sustainable concrete in practice (10:00 – 11:30), exploring how net-zero ambition is being translated into measurable outcomes on site.
Dr Noushin Khosravi of MPA UK Concrete will provide an update on progress under the UK Concrete Sustainable Construction Strategy Framework and the Roadmap to Beyond Net Zero, while Dr Vaishnav Kumar Shenbagam of the University of Leeds will outline the development of belitic calcium sulfoaluminate cement as a lower-emission UK alternative to Portland cement. Digital delivery and real-time carbon visibility will be examined by Joe Kirwin of Tarmac, Lisa von Graevenitz of Converge and Christopher Wellgreen of J Coffey Group, before Dr Ali Riza Erson and Professor Akbar Javadi of the University of Exeter present advances in 3D concrete printing using recycled aggregates.
At lunchtime, Shaping a more sustainable concrete infrastructure with advanced carbon materials (12:30 – 13:25) will assess the growing role of graphene and other advanced carbons in cementitious systems. Dr Chirag Ratwani of the Advanced Carbons Council will focus on validated performance data and standardisation challenges, Mike Harrison of Concretene will address cost-effective scale-up, and Dr Lisa Scullion of the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre at The University of Manchester will share insights from translating graphene research into commercial construction applications.
The afternoon session, Properties of ternary and calcined clay concretes (14:30 – 15:30), brings together members of The Concrete Society task group updating TR74: Cementitious Materials. Gareth Wake of the British Ready-Mixed Concrete Association will examine implementation of the Equivalent Performance of Combinations Concept within BS 8500, while Apostolos Tsoumelekas of Skanska UK will share findings from UK calcined clay trials, including lessons from the REAL and Ex-Clay projects. The session concludes with a technical panel including Simon Chudley of LKAB Minerals and Professor Leon Black of the University of Leeds.
Day Two: Precast, repair, digitisation and skills
Day Two opens with Precast & concrete repair spotlights (10:30 – 11:30), focusing on durability, design efficiency and whole-life performance. Andrea Charlson of The Concrete Centre will explore practical pathways to lower-carbon precast design, while Christian Stone of Concrete Preservation Technologies will examine the incipient anode effect in patch repairs and compare common treatment strategies.
Digital verification and quality assurance take centre stage in Using maturity monitoring to establish element strength for identity testing (12:30 – 13:30). William Brentnall of Balfour Beatty Vinci will present research into match curing and the viability of maturity methods as an alternative to cube testing, with Marcus Hine of OTB Concrete discussing wider adoption of digital strength monitoring in practice.
The programme closes with Attracting, developing and retaining new talent in the concrete industry (14:30 – 15:15). Claire Ackerman of The Concrete Society, John Reddy of the Institute of Concrete Technology and Lauren Fairley of the Concrete Repair Association will discuss how the sector is responding to the skills gap and supporting professional development in an industry undergoing rapid decarbonisation and digital transformation. The session concludes with the presentation of the 2026 Emerging Talent Awards, recognising outstanding professionals aged 30 and under across Design Excellence, Materials Specialist, Sustainability, and Precast & Offsite.
