Skanska scoops $382.9m contract for LA light rail extension

5 Apr 11 Skanska has been awarded a US$382.9m (£237.2m) Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority contract to extend the light rail system.

Skanska has a history of work in California and as a transit builder in the eastern USA. “This project will be the first where we combine those abilities in Southern California and our largest project on the West Coast to date,â€‌ said president of Skanska USA Mike McNally.

The design-build contract will be performed in a joint venture with Rados, with a 70% share for Skanska. Parsons Brinckerhoff will provide design services as a subcontractor to the joint venture.

The joint-venture will construct an 11.3km light rail extension from Culver City to Santa Monica in Los Angeles County. Construction will begin in shortly with anticipated completion in mid-2015. The scope of work includes 22.5km of track as well as five at-grade stations and two aerial stations. Additionally, the project includes 1.6km of elevated structure.
