Blackburn-based Vital Energi was awarded a آ£6.9m contract by East Riding of Yorkshire Council in February. This week the council held a ground breaking ceremony to formally get construction under way.
The 6 MW Rawcliffe Bridge solar farm, near Goole, is designed to generate enough electricity to power every leisure centre operated by the local authority.
Once operational, the solar farm will also offset approximately 1,400 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year.
Councillor Paul West, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “It’s great to see this project under construction, which will play a key role in fulfilling our environmental obligations and benefitting the local environment in a cost effective manner.â€
